Spring 2017 Training

What: Asylum Evaluation Training with the Weill Cornell Center for Human Rights
When: Saturday February 4, 2017. Check-in/breakfast beginning at 7:30 am. The event will run from 8:00 am until 1:30 pm and includes lunch
Where: Weill Auditorium, 1300 York Ave.

On February 4, 2017 from 8:00 am – 1:30 pm we will hold a training session, led by our volunteer evaluators, where you can learn more about the role of clinicians and students in the asylum evaluation process. The training will comprise lectures that provide an introduction to asylum law and affidavit writing and cover the three types of evaluations: gynecological, physical, and psychological. Additionally, during the last part of the training, attendees will break out into small groups led by experienced evaluators to discuss redacted, example affidavits drawn from the leaders' work. This training is open to any clinician (MD, PsyD, PA, LCSW, NP) or student interested in performing forensic evaluations of asylum seekers.

The training is REQUIRED for any student or clinician who wishes to volunteer with the WCCHR and has yet to attend a previous training. No prior experience is necessary. To learn more about forensic evaluations, please visit our website at http://wcchr.com or contact us at wcchr@med.cornell.edu.

WCCHR Fall Training (September 19, 2026)

The Weill Cornell Center for Human Rights (WCCHR) invites individuals interested in conducting forensic medical, psychological, or gynecological evaluations for people seeking asylum to attend its Fall 2026 Training.

Date: Saturday, September 19, 2026
Time: 8:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.
Location: Weill Auditorium, 1300 York Avenue, 2nd Floor

The program will feature lectures and small-group sessions led by physicians and professionals with expertise in forensic medical evaluation. Participants will receive foundational training and have opportunities to engage with WCCHR faculty and experienced student volunteers.

Eligibility

Participants must fall into one of the following categories:

MDs (at the attending level), DOs (at the attending level), PsyDs, clinical psychiatrists (PhDs), NPs, PAs, or LCSWs.
Current PA or MD students at Weill Cornell Medicine.
If you do not fall into either of these categories, you may volunteer as a case manager. While case managers do not directly participate in evaluations, they play an important role in supporting our clients.

Attendance Options

Volunteers located on the WCM campus or elsewhere in New York City are strongly encouraged to attend in person, as this format facilitates discussion and active participation in the small-group sessions.

WCCHR Pods

WCCHR Pods is a monthly discussion group discussing cases. WCCHR Pods session has ~5 clinician evaluators with ~10-15 students to learn about human rights advocacy, build skills for conducting forensic medical evaluations, and foster mentorship and community. We meet on the first Thursday of the month from 6-7 pm throughout the year. Please email wcchr@med.cornell.edu if you would like to be added to the listserv.

WCCHR Speaker Series

WCCHR Speaker Series are our monthly speaker events. In the past, we have invited speakers to discuss ethics in human rights and reproductive justice.

WCCHR Training

We hold Spring and Fall training sessions, once a semester, to train new evaluators and student volunteers.
